My favorite recent quote:
"Activism is a way for useless people to feel important, even if the consequences of their activism are counterproductive for those they claim to be helping and damaging to the fabric of society as a whole." Thomas Sowell(no puppies were startled in the stealing of this from Two Nervous Dogs.) Posted by LeeAnn at March 10, 2004 07:37 AM
That sounds about right! I was flipping thru an issue of Ad Busters and someone in there was actually writing that maybe some of the more extreme protest tactics weren't working. Duh.
Posted by: Beth at March 10, 2004 09:42 AMIt's so funny, some people think of activism as PETA, NRA, Gloria Allred -- while I think of activism as Women's Suffrage, civil rights, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, auto safety.
I think the key is that the "activity" part of the activism has to be in support of a noble cause, and the action has to be seen as reasonable to most people.
Posted by: Joe Crawford at March 10, 2004 10:03 AMA non-fluffy post? Are you sure that the title didn't startle the poor little puppies? After all, when a puppy is in the house, all posting must be fluffy!
I shall become a puppy activist! Yes, I think this will fit my lifestyle. I shall agitate for more and better fluff in posts.
More fluff - or the puppies will be let loose in your house to do what puppies do best!!!

Posted by: Teresa at March 10, 2004 10:10 PMDoes this mean that my quest to have a national Ikea Day is counterproductive and hurtful to Americans in general?
Posted by: Da Goddess at March 11, 2004 12:55 AMTeresa, rest assured no puppies were startled. They paused not one lick or gambol.
Goddess, National Ikea Day is not counterproductive to anything except my bank account's chubbiness. In fact, it's necessary to all right-thinking shoppers' well-beings! It's.... it's like chocolate!
Posted by: LeeAnn at March 11, 2004 07:21 AMI thought every day was National Ikea Day. At least here in Chicago it seems the entire population of the midwest makes a daily trek to their parking lot.
Also, I'm quite sure that Ikea is run by evil people. They suck you in with cool stuff at really good prices. This makes you fill your cart to the brim - whereupon, you stand in line for the next 3 hours waiting to check out. Thus you waste the entire day and you run up huge bills while trying to pick up all those good deals. *G*
