Gravel

I just finished reading an interview in "Entertainment Weekly" with Chris Rock, who is hosting the upcoming Academy Awards. I'm at a loss.
In the interview, he plays the race card no less than five times, and says awards shows are "idiotic". He also says he's not going to do any of his material, but will save it for an after-awards show he'll trot off to do elsewhere, where he'll rip apart the ceremony. His game plan to be the host of one of the biggest movie awards show is to "run out the clock".
Sure, Chris Rock is a damn funny comedian. He's a good actor. And yes, certainly award shows mean less and less as they tend to pop up every other month for every permutation of art/film/music they can find.
But don't you think maybe they could have at least found a guy who gives a shit about anything except his own agenda to host? What's next, they'll get Michael Moore up there to hand out the golden naked guy?
Obviously I woke up on the wrong side of the remote this morning.

I wonder if he was trying to be funny in print and it misses the mark because he's a standup comedian instead of a writer? I'm not a huge fan of Chris Rock, and I loathe all award shows... so I won't watch it anyway. But, I seem to want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt (and I don't even know why... )

I know what you mean, Teresa, I like his work a lot and I wanted to feel differently about the interview. But most of the other answers sounded very sincere and not like part of a schtick. I think too that since I'm a movie junkie, I get my hackles up when someone is snotty about my filmy-drug of choice. :)

The Oscars deserve some respect. THat interview will mean he'll never be back. They are touchy over at AMPAS.

i bought his last special on dvd for my brother for christmas. if he doesn't open it soon, i am.

I'm stumped over the choice of Rock for the Oscars gig......WHY? Of all the people in Hollywood, why on earth did they pick him? Was Whoopi unavailable? I mean, is this the year of the mandatory black host? I don't get it.
